Unfortunately, it doesn’t work that way.
Well, at least not if you want to have a long-lasting online business that generates a passive income that can sustain your lifestyle.
Creating a sustainable business that grows and becomes profitable takes time – especially if you are a beginner and just getting started with your online business.
But some people genuinely want to know how long it will take them to start seeing progress in terms of actual dollars made from their online business.
These are persons who are not afraid to put in the work every day to produce positive results. It’s just that they want to have an idea of how long before they can expect to see a return on either their time or money invested.
So as a result, one of the questions that a lot of new online entrepreneurs LOVE to ask is: How Fast Can You Make Money Online?
It is one of the most popular questions I come across in most of the internet marketing Facebook groups that I’m in. It is also a recurring thread on numerous internet marketing forums as well.
Unfortunately, there’s no clear-cut answer to that question.
But Wait, Don’t Go Just Yet!
I’m still going to give you a realistic view of how fast to make money online in terms of how long a particular method or business model may take.
But As you’d imagine, how fast you make money online will depend on where you are at the moment in your online business experience.
It will also depend on what method you’ll be employing, your level of expertise as well as numerous other factors.
… And more IMPORTANTLY, it will depend on your definition of FAST.
Asking how fast you can make money online is like asking how fast it will take to get to New Your City.
It depends on where you are at the moment, what will be your means of transportation as well as several other factors.
Simply put, the time it takes to generate a good income or any money at all online will vary for everyone.
Two persons could start their online ventures at the same time using the exact same business model and one person starts seeing success in a week while the other takes a month. Which means you are not tied down to any specific location.
You could have your website up in a few hours and ready to collect payment from all over the world. And as long as you can collect a payment, you can start selling and making money!
So whether or not your business starts making money fast (depending on your definition of fast), the idea is that you don’t have to invest a lot of money upfront to ‘test‘ the waters!
Plus while it may take some time to start generating passive income from your online business, depending on the type of business, this waiting period can be as little as a few hours to a few days as opposed to years.

I believe that the best way for me to answer this question is to give you an overview of some of the potential methods to make money online that you can start doing today.
I’ll give you a summary of how each method work and then let you know potentially how long it will take you to start making money from a specific method.

The first factor that will affect/determine how fast you make money online is whether or not you are utilizing free (in terms of money invested) vs paid marketing strategies.
As you can imagine, free methods will be time-intensive and require that you put in some elbow grease to become successful.
Paid methods, on the other hand, will require that you have some start-up capital to invest to grow your business.
Typically paid methods are faster than free methods because you can spend money on advertising and get people to your offers, products, or services within minutes.
Already you can see why asking: “how fast to make money online” does not have a one size fits all answer.
Because as it relates to free methods, the person willing to put in more time and effort will get results faster. While as it relates to paid methods, the person who has more capital to invest will typically see results faster.

For example, let’s say you decided that you wanted to use Youtube ads revenue as your source of income, and let’s assume that your channel is already monetized.
Even then, it would take you up to 30 days to receive a payment.
While if you are a freelancer, you could get your payment deposited into your Paypal account right away.
Please Note: When I say potentially, I am referring to the best-case scenario!
With that said, let’s get into the different methods you could use to make money online and see how fast they could “Potentially” get results.
#1 Affiliate Marketing
I had to start with affiliate marketing because it is one of my favorite ways to make money online.
With affiliate marketing, you can choose from hundreds of thousands of products from different affiliate networks and start promoting right away.
The great thing about affiliate marketing is that in some cases, you don’t need to set up a website to start promoting products or services.
The affiliate network will provide you with a unique link to a specific product that you can share and if someone makes a purchase of that product you’ll make a commission.
So how fast can you make money online with affiliate marketing?
Best Case Scenario
– Within 24 Hours!
If you promote products from affiliate networks that offer an instant payout to your Paypal account then you could potentially make money your very first day. An example of such an affiliate network is JVZoo.com.
An example of a best-case scenario would be you signed up to promote a product or service and simply shared your affiliate link on your personal Facebook page. One of your friends clicked on the link and decided to purchase the product and boom you make your first commission.
Typical And More Realistic Situation
– Within 30 Days (Paid Methods) – Up To Six Months+ (Free Methods)
Starting out from scratch you won’t have an audience and simply sharing a link on your Facebook page is NOT a business model.
Yes, you can make a sale that way but this is not sustainable. So the typical thing to do would be to find a niche market that you can serve and create content that attracts your ideal audience.
You’d then need to set up a website or at least a lead capture page to collect your visitor’s information and then you can market affiliate products to them.
All of this takes time but if you are a go-getter, you could be up and running from your very first week.
If you are using paid methods, then you can start driving traffic as soon as your very first week. Potentially you could make your first commission that week if you are on point with your targeting.
Depending on the products you choose to promote and depending on the affiliate networks, you can expect to get a payout at least 2 weeks after the sale is generated. Some networks may take 30 days or longer to cover refund periods.
Personally, if you are just starting out I wouldn’t recommend paid traffic until after you have some free marketing experience under your belt. Because while you could make sales fast, you can also burn a lot of cash fast without any returns as well.
Using free methods, on the other hand, will require that you put out a lot of content to attract your ideal audience.
For example, you could start a Youtube channel, a podcast, or a blog.
The important thing will be that you are consistent in putting out high-quality content and that will drive more persons to your affiliate offers so you can generate commissions.

Unlike affiliate marketing where you can simply promote a link, you’ll need to spend days or even weeks creating your product from scratch.
For the best-case scenario, your product could be a simple ebook. But even then, it will take some time to research and organize the material.
On top of that, you’ll need to create an effective sales funnel if you want to generate sales.
All of this takes time!
Typical And More Realistic Situation
– Within 90 Days (Paid Methods) – Up To Six Months+ (Free Methods)
Just as with affiliate marketing, you will need to focus on building an audience that you can market to.
In this case, where you are promoting your own products it is even more important. You need an audience that you can serve and they’ll provide feedback and help you to make your product the best it can be.
So typically, if you are paying for traffic, you can grow your audience faster than if you are using free traffic.
How fast you earn money online from creating your own product will depend on how fast you can grow your audience, get feedback from them on what they need, package that information in a high-quality product and execute an effective sales funnel.
#3 Social Media Manager
This is one of the online jobs that are HOT right now.
If you are verse on Facebook, Instagram, or any of the top social networks, you could manage the social media accounts of other businesses. You could do this either as a freelancer or owning your own social media agency.
Some of the tasks involved are moderating and responding to audience comments; manage social media partnerships with other brands, and create and/or post shareable videos and images, etc to grow the business pages and build rapport with audiences.
So how fast can you generate an income online as a social media manager?
Best Case Scenario
– Within 24 Hours!
You can start out as a freelancer and either get on the phone or send an email directly to businesses and sell yourself on how you can help them grow their online presence and generate more customers for their business.
Depending on how creative and persuasive you are, you could land your first set of clients on the very first day.
Typical And More Realistic Situation
– Within 30-60 Days
Realistically it will take a few tries to hone your sales skills to convince businesses to trust you given that you don’t have any prior testimonials to share – since you are just starting out.
So as a starting point, you may also want to offer your service for free to gain some testimonials that you can use to attract new clients. This will take a few weeks after which you’ll be more equipped to get new clients.
So within 30-60 days is a more realistic duration of how long the average person can make money online as a social media manager.
#4 Display Advertising
In order to get involved with this method, you’ll need to first have a blog or website that has lots of content and get a lot of traffic.
Once your website is getting a good amount of traffic (think thousands of visitors per day), you can sign up to display advertising networks and allow them to place ads on your website.

When you sign up for these networks, they’ll provide you with a snippet of code that you add to your website. This code will allow them to rotate different advertisements that may appeal to your audience.
With display advertisements, you don’t have to sell anything. Once a visitor clicks on an ad, you’ll earn some money. How much depends on the niche your website is in and how much advertisers are willing to pay for those clicks.
Typically the ad network will split the revenue in a 50:50 ratio. Sometimes more, sometimes a little less.
So how fast can you expect to make money with display advertising?

The key to making money from display advertising is getting a LOT of traffic to your blog/website. And when you are applying to most of the ad networks, they’ll want to have proof that your website is indeed getting traffic.
Some networks will want to see your last 30 days – 6 months of traffic analytics before they approve your application.
Again, if you are paying for traffic you can get results much faster. However, when it comes to ‘display advertising’ I wouldn’t recommend paying for traffic until you really know what you are doing.
Since you are not selling products or services, what you’ll be doing is known as traffic arbitrage. This means buying traffic at a low cost and hoping that advertising revenue will have a positive ROI.
#5 Youtube Marketing
Youtube is a beast because you can make money in several different ways using the platform.

You could potentially target a high commercial keyword and rank your video on the first page of Google and Youtube within 24 hours.
Your target audience could be searching for information and find your video and then buy the product you are either selling or recommending.
Depending on which network the offer is from, you could have an instant commission in your Paypal account within 24 hours.
Realistically
– 30 days
After 30 days of being consistent, you should have several videos ranking and getting targeted views.
If you are targeting the right audience with a burning problem then you should be able to start generating affiliate commissions or making your own product sales.
This also depends on how you connect with your audience and the quality of the content you provide in your videos.
Getting Sponsorship Deals On YouTube –
Best Case Scenario

With sponsorship deals, brands will reach out to you to feature their products or service on your channel.
Unfortunately, if you have a very small channel most brands won’t any attention to you. It just wouldn’t be worth their time.
So if you are starting a brand new channel, it will take at least 6 months to grow to a certain level where brands will recognize what you have to offer and start reaching out and making deals.
YouTube Advertising Revenue –
Best Case Scenario
– 4 months!
Firstly, Youtube’s policy is that you must have at least 1000+ subscribers and 4000 watch hours in the past 12 months to be eligible for monetization.
The good news though is that you can send in your application even before you meet those requirements and Youtube will approve your account once they are met.
I put this at 4 months because it will take some time to grow your subscriber base and watch time hours.
However, if you are consistent and target the right audience and promote the heck out of your channel, you can reach this goal and start making money within 3 months.
Keep in mind that the money you make in one month won’t be paid until the following month!

However, if you are not a video person but enjoy writing then it would be best if you focus on blogging. The quality of your work will be so much better which will equate to a better return on either your time or money invested.
